1st Half
We had the ball to begin the game. Jack was playing striker, and we had no substitutions. This team you could tell, was going to give us a difficult battle. It started with jack passing back to Jad on right defense, then he crossed it back up to Theo on the wing side. Luke started as left wing, and Juan was mid-fielder, with Ethan as his usual keeper position. The game was very exciting, with many ups-and-downs of the field. I felt like the turf under my feet was rumbling with all the action. The Saints were very skilled at getting the ball places without loosing it quickly. All of our players were not going to let them do this to us though: we played the ball very hard on the pressure, but we just couldn't keep it long enough to get a nice looking shot off. Later in the first half, Jack made a beautiful pass from the middle off to the left where Juan gave the ball to the back of the opponents goal for the first goal for us! Before that, the saints had nailed goals one and two of the match, by a little bit of luck, and a little bit of skill. Immediately after the great shot from Juan, they replied with a nice pass to the back field on our side. It takes some getting-used to having absolutely NO offsides! The player passed it in behind me...but I sprinted back and made a poke at the ball right before the striker shot. They rebounded it, dribbled to the middle, and scored unfortunately. The quarter was not going our way, when Mateo arrived and subbed in for Juan. Theo got the ball after that, and made a long spurt of constant attacking of them, which ended after a nice clear for them. The whistle was blown shortly after they scored once more, by dribbling it past everyone, then just slamming it in with full power. The half ended 2-4, we were down by 2. (Still time to catch up though. 20 minutes worth of time)
Coach Calum will hopefully be back soon from a nice family trip, but for now, we have Ethan's mom as assistant, and Jad's dad as coach...making all the subs and doing a great job at it. Going into the second half, positions looked like this: Juan as keeper, Simon as center defense, Jad as right defense, Luke as left defense, Ethan as center-mid fielder, Jack as striker, Mateo as right wing, and Theo as left wing.
2nd Half
The second half was even more exciting! We played very well, although Juan wasn't there with his enormous leg, but we played great! Ethan took his spot in center middle. The second half began with a nice pressure from Jack, ending up with us on their side attacking like crazy. Ethan tried to shoot, but it went so high up it touched the net above the goal which results in a penalty. It was a great effort though. We kept this pressure up, until mateo danced with the ball after winning it from the right wing, and crossing it to the middle. Jack was there, but the pass JUST went out of reach, and they won the ball back. Jack had a few other chances that seeming slim, but I think we created a nice fear of us on the opposing team. To prove this, towards the end, we were ferocious: Jack got a foul, Jad nearly happily knocked out one player, and som how I drew 3 fouls, and almost got kicked out from a really bad foul. They scored on us again from sheer luck, then again...then AGAIN! This was mostly done because they had a bigger team than us. We have fast, tall, small players. One thing that made me happy was that they passed it every time they got within 2 feet of any of us. That shows that they were definitely afraid to play us one-on-one. Anyways, they were up to 2-7 with 3 minutes to go, when Jack made a nice run: He drove it right up the middle, then he crossed it to Luke. Luke sadly lost it, but I eventually got to play him, and I took it away. I dribbled up the right side and went honestly...way to far. Now is a good time to explain that I wanted to score a goal for a few of my cousins in town...and I had promised them," I will get a goal for you guys." Sadly, I did not score, but I made a effort, and that was all I could do. We, again, almost scored with jack and Mateo, Jack made some nice moves, then he made a give'n'go with Mateo, but the goalie got to it very quickly. The whistle and buzzer ended this A/C filled cool fun match in the middle of Summer, to end the Summer league (mostly!).
I hope you have enjoyed following Surf/Evolution on our Summer Indoor League journey through this excting turn of matches against some very great teams, and many amazing matches! The next game will be against an older girls team, and I won't be able to make that game, so for me the season is over, and therefore it is here too. We may be having another playoff game though, which should be really fun.
